KAWHIA.

Since the wreck of the s.s. Kia Ora, the s.s. Muritai has been running here irregularly, and several limes Kawhia has been very short of stores. Now the N.S.S. Co. have had the s.s. Waitangi thoroughly overhauled and done up, she will call here from three to four times a week. She is somewhat smaller than the Kia Ora, but a better sea boat, and faster. On her first, trip she only took eight and a-half hours from Onehunga to the Kawhia wharf. There is a good deal of bushfalling being done here this season ; Messrs C. R. Morris and Co. are having 500 acres felled themselves. The poll for a loan of £SOO for extensions to the wharf shed, was carried by 57 votes, against 2. A number of the settlers being dissatisfied with the prices charged by Auckland merchants, and with the rate of freight charged by the Northern Steamship Co. (17s 6d per ton), are trying to arrange for a steamer from Wellington, and are hopeful that they will succeed. ' The s.s. Waitangi has brought for the Marakopa Milling Co. three tons of sawmill fittings. They have shut down the flax mill for the winter, and are going to fill in the time cutting timber. It is said that the Government have bought a large part of the Taharoa Block, on the south side of the harbour. It is to be hoped that it will soon be opened for selection. Nearly all the lessees in the Native townships have thrown up their sections, as they think the rents too-high, and see no prospect of acquiring the freehold.
