NATIVE TOWNSHIPS.
During his recent visit to Wellington, Major Lusk, Chairman of the Waitomo Count}' Council, interviewed the Hon. J. Carroll, Native Minister, and brought before him the position of holders of leases in townships in which all the work of street formation had yet to be done. Major Lusk suggested that instead of an amount of 5 per cent, only being allowed to be deducted from the rents for administration, the amount should be increased to 20 or 25 per cent., to enable the Maori Land Board to assist in bearing the cost of heavy initial work. The Minister stated that he was of opinion something should be done to equalise matters, and it would be provided for in the proposed legislation this session. A further suggestion was made to the effect that the Government should take over the townships, giving fair value to the owners, and preference to the present holders of leases. The Minister, however, thought the cost would be too great.
