MATIERE.
On Saturday, July 27th, the return football match between Mnigaroa and Matiere was played on the ground of the latter, and resulted in a win for Matiere by nine points (three tries) to nil. Mangaroa won the toss and elected to kick with King Sol at their backs. Matiere pressed from the onset, and had their opponents penned in their own 25 for most of the first spell, T. Humphries after a pretty piece of play obtaining the first try, after sixteen minutes play. H. Doar soon after supplemented the score by a really smart bit of work. On resuming after the spell, Mangaroa played with more vim and frequently the Matiere citadel was in danger, but all to no account. During the last twenty minutes Reteni obtaining the leathe'r from a good pass grounded the ball behind the posts. The kick at goal was a failure. The game was contested in a true sportsmanlike and friendly manner. For Matiere, considering their want of all played well, and it would be invidious to pick out for special mention one more than another, while Morpeth, Simpson, Bruce (who, unfortunately, was incapacitated during the latter stage of the game) and Brown played sterling games for the losers. Mr A. Le Cocq had charge of the game and gave general satisfaction. In the evening the visitors were entertained to tea and a dance in the hall. The butter factory at Niho Niho is now well under way, most of the frame being erected, and in a month's time should be nearing completion. Messrs MacEwan's engine-shed in Matiere is now erected, and the majority of the machinery is on the site. Mr Bond is in charge of the erection of both these factories. Several frosts have been experienced here of late, and these have checked the growth of grass considerably.
