THE ROADING PROBLEM.
Major Lusk, Chairman of the Waitomo County Council, brought the pressing needs of back blocks settlers before the Counties Conferencedurin/r its closing' stages, lie moved : " ] hat: this Conference ur;;es upon the (iovernmcnt the desirability ofeonstructin,<a and metallin;', •''< the earliest possible date, one main or arterial road through the entire length of every county not so provided, and that a loan be raised and ear-marked for the purpose." The mover considered this was a far more important matter than askin;;' for small branch lines of railway. "We arc up to our necks in mud," he said. " and can't /ret to the railway for six months in the year in the Kin, 1 ;' Country. There is no possibility of K'ettin;; a wheeled vehicle alon/r the road." The motion was seconded by Mr Ritchie, of Wan/ranui, who said he had been in New Zealand -j 5 years, and sympathised with Major Lusk. ' The President (Mr A. K. J nil) questioned whether, if the Conference carried the motion, it would not be tantamount to saving that County Counoils were not able to make their own ' roads. A Voice : " They are not. " The President: "Then the sooner County Councils are abolished the better, lam afraid the Covcrnmcnt mi;'hl misconstrue this resolution, and that the effect would be very different from what Major Lusk anticipates. "
The motion, whilst it found a good deal of sympathy, was lost.
