W.B. AND HIS CRITICS.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —When the experienced journalist receives correspondence signed " Ratepayer," he anticipates thv writer's objective to be evasion o! taxes ; or, " Citizen," that his name L not on the city rolls ; or, " Pro Bono Publico," that he is the " publico " ; or, Disgusted," that he is so because some pet scheme has been foiled ; or, " Backblocker," that he is ashamed of his name. 'J But," it may be retorted, " the same applies to ' W.B.' " And the retort would be just were ( these initials and their owner unknown to every man, woman and child of Te Kuiti and its districts. These being incontrovertible facts : will my opponent raise his vizor, and lay aside his shield of " Backblocker." When a person thinks that his antagonism to another's policy is a matter for the public weal, and intends to attack his personal bonafides, literary and journalistic etiquette has now decreed that such public flagellation must be accompanied by the flagellator's true name. Or must be satisfied when the flagellated in reply adds to the pseudonym his opponent has adopted, that of " Assinus Magnus." I am tired of punching an effigy stuffed with straw. I shall believe, and Our public will agree, that I am within my privilege to ignore his further attacks as those of an unworthy knight of the pen—joust.—l am, etc., W.B.
