TAUMARUNUI.

At a meeting of the Racing Club, held last week, the Secretary stated y that accounts to the amount of £l4 I were owing and the Club had only £2 r in hand. It was decided to hold a plain and fancy dress ball on May 3rd, double tickets to be 10s 6d, extra lady 2s 6d. The Club has done a considerable amount of work on the racecourse, and it was resolved to make application to the Land Board for a lease of the course. Messrs Hunt and Ryan offered to sow the course with suitable grass, and wait for payment until the Club was in a position to recompense them. The fords across some of the King Country streams are not at all safe in many instances. While crossing the Taringamutu river in a trap on Thursday last, Mr Coogan, dairyman, got into difficulties, the vehicle being washed away and the horse drowned. Four business premises were destroyed by fire «t Taumarunui last week, including Messrs Dallas and Co's. shop and billiard room, Mr Dunster's blacksmith's shop, Dr Cairns' surgery, and Mr Kenderdine's chemist shop: Mr Kenderdine's stock was insured for £l2O, Dallas and Co's building for £l5O, and the billiard table was also covered. Dr Cairns suffered a serious loss, among his property, which was uninsured, being a valuable set of surgical instruments.
