♦ Messrs McNicol and Co., report as follows: — At Ohaupo on 19th inst. we yarded 460 head of cattle. Buyers were scarce, the only enquiry being for young steers, all of these selling. 15 to 18-month steers, £2 2s 6d to £2 10s; 2 to 2%-year steers, £3 5s to £3 16s : fat and forward cows and heifers, £3 15s to £4 8s; fresh-conditioned 2%-year-old speyed heifers and empty cows, £2 lOs to £3 ; 18-month heifers, 30s to 35s ; 3-year heifers, in calf, £3 5s ; well-grown shorn lambs, IOs; cull woolly lambs, 6s 9d ; medium woolly lambs, 8s 8d ; full-mouth ewes, 1 to 14s. At Cambridge on the 20th and 21st, we held our annual autumn horse fair, and offered 476 broken and unbroken horses, in addition to contracting plant, vehicles, implements and harness. Farmers were present from all parts of the district, and a few outside buyers were also operating. Although a number of horses were passed, we succeeded in I placing 315, and, altogether, the sale was an improvement on, and exceeded that of last year. Unbroken stock, medium and light draughts £l6 to £3O; heavy draught filly, £42 ; I and 2-year-old mediumldraughts, £l2 to £22 ; I heavy 2-year gelding, £3O ; upstanding light harness sorts, and suitable hacks, £l2 to £l7; smaller and younger sorts, £lO downwards ; contracting plant on behalf of Mr C. Shaw, sold well, D.F. ploughs bringing £6 to £9 ; waggon, £25; dray, £6; plough harness, 12s 6d to 30s ; set of medium draught horses right out of work, £22 to £36 ; heavy draught mare £45; best heavy draught 3 to 5-year-old, £45 to £53 lOs ; medium draught, same age, £3O to £4O; medium draughts, 7-year to aged £ls to £27; best upstanding hacks and light harness sorts, £lB to £25; others £lO to £ls ; good cobs £lO to £l6; lighter sorts of each class £9 downwards. We also offered for unreserved sale, a number of thoroughbreds on behalf of Mr R. J. Matthews, of Waitara, 5 yearlings making 9, 10, 15 and 18 guineas ; 4 2-year-olds, 15, 21, 15 and 27 guineas ; 4 brood mares with foals at foot, and stinted to Westmere, 18, 22, 38 and 38 guineas; the thoroughbred stallion Westmere (Escutcheon Leoness) made 27 guineas.
At Cambridge on the 21st inst., we offered 3000 ewes from Gisborne, and 2000 from Hawke's Bay, those from the former district selling as follows : 2-tooth ewes, 18s ;4, 6 and full-mouth ewes, 15s iod; full-mouth long wool ewes, 15s 6d; full-mouth Romney cross ewes, 14s 6d; close woolled ewes, 13s 6d; long wool ewes from Hawke's Bay lot, 16s 3d; 2-tooth rams, 2% to 2% guineas. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company Ltd., report as follows: — On Thursday last, at Hamilton yards, a smaller muster of cattle than usual was brought forward. Fat steers realised from £7 us to £7 16s ; fat cows, £5 to £5 9 ; fat heifers, £4 15s ; good strong calves, 16s to 19s ; smaller sorts, 12s to 14s; store cows, £1 12s 6d to £2 lOs ; fresh-conditioned cows and heifers, £2 15s to £3 3s; fat wethers, 19s 6d ; weaner pigs, 7s 6d to I2s ; store pigs, 14s 6d to 19s. On Friday, we held our monthly stock sale a Cambridge and yarded over 650 head of cattle there being a large attendance of buyers and though prices for 2% and 3-year-old steers were lower than previous month and a few pens reserved, other classes held their value, and we report a successful sale. The beef pens were well supplied with 90 odd head and number of them prime steers, all sold at the hammer with the exception of one pen of inferior steers. Fat Steers from Messrs W. Gray, G. Booth, W. Parr, W. C. Morgan, and W. and J. McMillan made from £7 I7s to £9 2s ; lighter weight from other owners, £5 18s to £6 I2s 6d; fresh conditioned 3-year-old steers, £5 9s; 2-year-old steers, £3 4s to £3 lOs ; 15 and 18 months steers, £2 5s to £2 9s ; mixed yearlings, £l I2s to £l 19s ; yearling to 18 months dairy heifers, £l lOs to £1 18s; 2-year-old ! heifers, £l 16s to £2 2s ; store cows, to £2 is; calves yarded in large numbers realized from £1 is to £1 5s ; for other owners, 16s to 18s 6d ; small sorts, 8s to 21s; springing heifers, £4 ; 2 and 3-year-old bulls, £2 lOs to £3 4s ; fat ewes, 14s ; store pigs, £l lOs ; weaners' 7s 6d to lOs ; small pigs, 3s 6d to ss. On Wednesday, March 27th, at Te Kuiti, we yarded over 900 head of "cattle. A large number of settlers attended from the back country, Waikato and neighbourhood, and though the bidding at the hammer was inclined to be languid, the bulk of the stock changed hands at auction and afterwards at prices similar to those ruling in the Waikato. About 130 really first-class forward conditioned steers from 3 to 4-years-old brought £5 to £6 lOs, 90 well-bred 2 to year steers £3 7s to £4, poor conditioned 3-year-old steers £4 5s to £4 13s, 15 to 18-months steers £2 2s to £2 lOs, mixed 18-months steers and heifers £1 18s to £2 is, fresh conditioned cows and heifers £2 I2s 6d to £3 6s, store cows £1 5s to £l 12s 6d, fat cows and heifers £3 17s 6d to £4 lOs, really well grown steer calves £l 5s to £1 9s 6d, good heifer calves £1 to £l 3s 6d, others (mixed sexes) 15s to 18s, springing heifers £3 lOs, dairy cows due to calve in spring £3; a useful riding cob, £7 lOs.
