STRATFORD-ONGARUE RAILWAY.
The Taranaki people are agitating for a more vigorous policy in connection with the Stralford-Ongarue railway. It is pointed out that the work was commenced at the Stratford end six years ago, and on March 31st last eleven miles were open for traffic, at
a cost of £52,000. It may be in order to draw attention to the fact that work on the Ongaruc end lias not been even started yet. Moreover, Hie Ongarue end of the proposed line will give the settlers in the Ohura valley access to the Main Trunk railway. At a rough estimate there are about 700 settlers in the Ohura, and the natural outlet to the valley is Ongarue. Metal is a scarce commodity in the district, and in the winter and spring months the roads develop into quagmires. The Taranaki people arc to be commended for their activity in the matter, but if greater expenditure is to be undertaken on the line we trust that the first consideration will be the starting of the work at the Ongarue end.
