The members of the Debating Society held their usual weekly meeting K on Friday night last, when there was a good attendance. The subject for debate was " Is extensive assisted immigration beneficiai to New Zealand." Mr E. H. Hardy took the affirmative and Mr F. H. Sims the negative. After an interesting discussion the question was put to the vote, the division showing five for the negative and four for the affirmative. The projected sports meeting is being energetically worked up, and the committee has now abont £4O on the contribution list. An excellent programme has been drawn up and the date of the gathering has been fixed for Tuesday, March 12th. The township was enshrouded in a pall of smoke during the past _ week, consequent on the bush fires in the vicinity. Most of the settlers have got in good burns. The public school re-opened this week, after an enforced holiday of over three months. There is an average attendance of over 80 at the school and the roll numbers about 110.
