An adjourned meeting of the above ■ Council was held <>n Monday last in Mr F. Kerr's commercial room, Te Kuili, when Major I,usk occupied the chair. The councillors present were: Messrs.!. Received. From the Clifton County Council, forwarding a cheque for £322 Is sd, amount of rates for that portion of their county ceded to the Waitomo County Council, From IVpartmcnl of I,;ibour calling attrition to section 10 of " The Shops and Office:; Act, igo,|," specifying on which week-day afternoon (he shop will be closed for the statutory half-holiday in the Waitomo County Council 1 )istricl. From Kawhia County Council, slating that the Council's request re the Harbour Board endowment woidd be brought up at their next meeting. STOCK PADDOCK The Aria settlers forwarded a letter requesting the Council to obtain a stock paddock for them, for use when travelling with slock in that district. Cr Hunt proposed thai a request be made to the Commissioner of Crown Lands asking for a certain seel ion of lands in the Aria district to be sel aside for the use of I lie settlers as a stock paddock, seconded by ("r I lofl'man and carried. WHICKLY HA!.!'" HOLIDAY. Messrs Harrow and Nicholls Te Kuiti storekeepers waited on the Council and requested that the weekly half-holiday be held on Thursday instead of Wednesday, mentioning that sales were usually held on a Wednesday in Te Kuiti as being the day on which the bank opened, but did not know whether it would suit the other stores in other parts of (he district.- Mr John Ormsby said he did not think it would affect Olorohanga in the least. Cv Ormsby moved that Thursday be fixed as the statutory half-holiday for the ensuing twelve months seconded by Cr Hoffman and carried. CROSSINC AT PIKONCIA. Mr Closey wrote referring to the bad state of the Mangocka stream crossing and suggested that (he Council spend the "thirds" available on the work. Ile was willing to undertake the work and also stated that lie would be willing to contribute a few pounds towards making this road passable. Proposed by Cr Hunt, that Cr Hoffman be instructed lo make j arrangements with Mr Closey to do the work, and if it was very urgent be empowered to spend the amount of " thirds " available, ..econded by Cr Ormsby and carried. CAKROI.I. STKKKT, IF, KUITI. Cr McCardle requested the Council to ask the Native Council lo have Carroll street open for Ira flic. It would, he said, be a great convenience for settlers driving cattic, as if this road was open it would not be necessary to bring slock right through the township. Cr Hunt also spoke on this mailer. Cr McCardle proposed, that the owners of fences across Carroll street be requested to remove same within thirty days, seconded by Hoffman and carried. OTOKOIIANCA I'OKD. Cr Scholes asked the Council to lake some steps in improving this ford. He said several accidents had occurred lately and that the settlors were trying lo gel Fllis and Burnand to widen their bridge for the use of the public, and with a little money spent on it would be good for at least seven years. Cr McCardle endorsed the previous speaker's remarks re the ford, bul though! if the Council wore going lo spend any money (hey had heller secure a right way lirsl. ( t Scholes said thai the money Fllis and Burnand asked for widening thebridge included the right of way. -Cr Hunt said this was a very important matter and considered il the most urgent in the County. Il was (he only road they had for bringing slock from Ohaupo, and he though! something' should be done.Cr llunl proposed, thai if Fllis and Buriiand's offer lo widen the Olorohanga bridge, over the Waipa, is still available the Council should accept it and the " thirds " accruing from that pari of the district be used as payment thereof, the balance lo be made up out of the general rates, and that Crs Scholes and MeGechic be authorised lo confer with Fllis and Burnand on the subject, seconded by Cr Scholes and carried. SLIP ON ROAD. Proposed by Cr Ormsby, that (he Railway Department be requested lo repair the approaches to the road a( (he railway bridge near the 127 mile peg, and lo slate that as the slip is within the railway reserve, it is the opinion of the Council thai il is their duty to do so, seconded by Cr McCardle and carried. ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting lo £)/ 5s <>! were passed for payment, and the Chairman and Clerk were deputed to inquire, into the charge of £8 8s made by the Valuation Department. The special meeting, adjourned since January 24111, was then held. Cr Hunt proposed, and Cr Hoff-' man seconded, than the resolution re striking a general rate of one halfpenny in the pound be confirmed.Carried. Cr Scholes proposed, and Cr Hunt seconded, thai the by-laws as read be confirmed and thai the date on which they come into force be tilled in by the Secretary. Carried.
