THE KING COUNTRY CHRONICLE. FRIDAY, JANUARY 11, 1907. MEDICAL FACILITIES.

As will be seen by a notice in another column, a public meeting is being called for the purpose of formulating a scheme to secure the services of a doctor for Te Kuiti and surrounding districts. This is a matter deserving of the support of every settler in the district, and it is to be sincerely hoped that every endeavour will be made to accomplish the object in view. At present there is no medical man within a radius of, practically, fifty miles, and the population of the area involved is already large and is increasing rapidly. Every year new settlers are coming in, and the necessity for a doctor is daily being brought home to us. Associated with the need for a doctor is the desirability of securing a cottage hospital in Te Kuiti. The advantages of such an institution are manifold, and are too obvious to dwell upon. Already, we are pleased to see, a substantial grant has been made by the Government for a ihospital at Taumarunui, and some correspondence has passed between the Chairman of the Te Kuiti Vigilance Committee, and Mr Jennings, M.H.R., with reference to securing a suitable grant, for the same purpose, at Te Kuiti. An excellent site has been reserved for a hospital, and it only remains for the settlers to formulate a sound and workable scheme, in order to attain the much desired end. This is a matter of supreme importance to all, and the necessity for hearty co-operation of both settlers, and township dwellers, cannot be too strongly advocated. The want is strikingly in evidence, and we trust to see an absolutely representative gathering on Wednesday next, when the question can be thoronghly discussed, and means adopted for the speedy accomplishment of an object that affects us all, and which, while it remains undone, is suggestive of a deplorable lack ot public spirit, and a neglect of our own interests, as well as those of our neighbours.
