OUR REGISTRATION DISTRICT

TO THE EDITOR. SIR, —ln having a Registration District (Births, Marriages and Deaths) set up, with Te Kuiti as the centre, it was with the object of enabling those settlers who make Te Kuiti their chief place for doing business, to register with the least possible travelling and expense. The desired object, I am sorry to say, has not been met satisfactorily by the present boundaries, some Government officer, probably without any local knowledge, and less care for the convenience of the settlers, being responsible for fixing the same. The Mairoa road has been laid down as the western boundary, while the eastern end extends to Lake Taupo. This, as will be apparent to anyone knowing the district, is too far easterly and not far enough to the west. In my opinion the western boundary should be extended so as to include Aria, Mangaotaki and Mangaohae settlers. It is also possible that the Mahoenui and Totoro settlers might find it to their advantage to be in this district. To the eastward the boundary should not extend further than the watershed between the Taupo and upper Waipa basins, as it is preposterous to expect settlers on the Taupo side to come to Te Kuiti, without road or railway communication, to say nothing of any other disadvantages. As I feel sure that the majority of settlers interested are not aware of what their position would be if they had, happily or unhappily, to seek the services of a Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages, their thanks, Sir, will be due to you, if, by giving pubilicity to the above, a satisfactory alteration is brought about.— I am, etc.. J. ORMSBY. Te Kuiti, 18/12/06.
