MANGAROA.

A very successful working-bee was held at Mangaroa on Saturday, December Ist when about 100 cubic yards of earth was excavated, preparatory to erecting the public hall, some of the timber for which has already arrived. Afternoon tea was provided by the ladies of .Mangaroa and dispensed by Mesdames Williams and Craven,, which no doubt accounted for the very large attendance in the afternoon. Great excitement has been caused here owing to a number of pegs being driven in the road, from end to end of the township. We are informed th,at this means metal straight away, a whole thirteen chains of it. It is to be hoped that the horses do not take fright at the first introduction of civilisation in these parts. Mr A. Julian, the newly appointed Road Engineer, passed through here on his way to Taumarunui, via Tokirima and Kururau block. About fifty people assembled at the residence of Mr and Mrs D. Bruce on Saturday night December Ist, and gave-that worthy young couple a right royal welcome in the good old-fash- ' ioned style. Such a collection of kerosene tins and other musical instruments have never before been seen in this district. Refreshments were handed round unsparingly, and numerous songs and recitations rendered to an appreciative audience. _ Needless to say the health of the bride and bridegroom was drunk with acclamation.
