TAUMARUNUI.

A very enjoyable social was tendered by the residents of Taumarunui to Miss Harvey, last week, on the occasion of her approaching marriage. The hall was prettily decorated with ferns and flowers. The entertainment took the form of a concert and dance, and great praise is due to the committee of ladies, who so successfully organised and carried out the arangements, the prime movers being Mesdames Laird, Mellis, and Ward. During the evening, songs were rendered by Mesdames 'Beere,. Harvey, Dickson, and Laird ; Misses Joyce and Connie Claridge gave " I don't want to play in your yard." The Rev. Mr Ward, on behalf of the residents, presented Miss Harvey with a handsome black marble clock. Mr Laird on behalf of the recipient, thanked the donors for the gift, which would be greatly prized, especially as it was so unexpected, and it showed the estimation in which she was held by the community; and would be appreciated accordingly. Dancing was kept up until a late hour. A meeting of residents of Taumarunui was held in Hakiaha Hall on Friday last, to elect trustees for the funds of the Taumarunui Hospital. A veryjjretty wedding, and one -in which great interest was taken, was celebrated at Taumarunui Presbyterian Church on Monday, November 26th, iby the Rev. Mr .Ward, when Miss Vera Harvey was married to Mr C. J. Riddell, of Aria. The bride, who was given away by her brother, looked very winsome in a soft white silk, made with a train, and trimmed with lovelyJace and accordion-pleted chiffon. She wore the customary wreath and veil, and carried a shower bouquet. The bride was attended by five bridesmaids, the chief being Miss Mair, who was gowned in a dainty costume of cream voile, and a becoming hat of pale heliotrope. The four little bridesmaids looked all that could be desired in their pretty soft silk dresses, the Misses D. Laird and Ward wearing white, and M. Mellis and R. Moffat cream. The bridegroom was supported by Mr Fisher. This being the first wedding in our new church, the happy couple were presented with a handsome bible.. After the ceremony, the bride's parents entertained a large number of guests at their residence in Hakiaha street, and all spent a very pleasant The presents were most numerous and useful, among the most noticable being a chest of drawers, made by the bride's young brother, a lad of only 15 years of age, and an apprentice of less than II months' experience. - The festivities were brought to a close by a dance in the hall in the evening. The tourist traffic is brightening up greatly, and the busy season has apparently quite set in. For[ the week ending Saturday, November 24th, a total of nearly 50 passed through Meredith House, many of the tourists being from England and Australia, while some were American, others from the Islands, and remainder New Zealanders, many of whom came from the South Island.
