WAITOMO COUNTY COUNCIL.

The usual monthly meeting of the above Council was held at Te Kuiti, on November 19th. The Chairman (Major D. H. Lusk), presided, and there were also present, Councillors Hoffman, J. Ormsby, McCardle, N. I. Hunt, T. Hunt, Loveday and Scholes. Leave of absence was granted to Councillor McGechy, who was unavoidably absent. CORRESPONDENCE.

A letter was read from the Public Works Department, stating the road in Te Kuiti, close to the creamery, had been closed as requested.— Received. A letter from the Taranaki County Council, stating that the amount of " thirds " from a section in the area recently acquired by the Waitomo Council had been reduced from £3 Is to £2 Os 4d. An application was received from Matiere for the position of dog tax collector, but as the position of the Council had not been defined, no steps were taken. MAIROA LOAN. The Chairman read the correspondence which had passed between himself and the Government with reference to the matter, but nothing definite had been received since last meeting. PROPOSED LOAN FOR TE RAU-A-MOA. On the motion of Councillor Hoffman, seconded by Councillor McCardle, it was resolved that the Council consent to a poll of ratepayers of Te Rau-a-moa riding being taken for the purpose of deciding whether the ratepayers should raise a loan of £SOO for metalling portion of the main Pirongia—Kawhia road, the loan to be subject to a grant of £ for £ from the Government, and a rate of id in the pound be struck on the sections to be benefitted, for the purpose of providing security. WAITOMO VALLEY ROADS. Proposed by Councillor McCardle, seconded by Councillor Hoffman, that the District Roads Engineer be requested to give an estimate of the cost of widening the Caves' Road from the eastern boundary of section 2, block X, Orahiri, to the junction of Mairoa road; also Hauturu road to the western boundary of M. Kelly's section; and also that the Clerk supply particulars of " thirds " and " fourths " accruing from the sections from section 2, block X, to sections fronting on Waitomo road, Mairoa riding.— Carried.

Attention was called by Councillor McCardle to the state of the Tumutumu and Waitonio valley roads, and the Councillor requested authority to expend the remaining " thirds," which had been scheduled, on these roads so as to enable settlers to get their wool out during the season. On the motion of Councillor N. I. Hunt, seconded by Councillor Scholes, the necessary authority was granted. COUNCIL'S STATUS.

On the motion of the Chairman, seconded by Councillor McCardle, it was resolved, that the Government be requested to inform the Council as to which roads were to be considered, Main Trunk, or Government, in the County, and would point out that until this question was settled, the Council was powerless to perform the functions for which it was elected. RATE FOR ENSUING YEAR. On the motion of Councillor Hunt, seconded by Councillor Scholes, it Was resolved that the rate for the ensuing term be Md in the £. BYE LAWS. The bye-laws which had been previously discussed by the Council were, with the addition of a clause regulating auctioneers' licenses, adopted. APPOINTMENT OF CHAIRMAN, j The annual meeting is to be held jm Wednesday next at Otorohanga, when the Chairman for the succeeding year will be elected. ACCOUNTS. Accounts, to the amount of £n/j>/6, were passed for payment, and the balance sheet to September 30th," was read. KAWHIA HARBOUR BOARD ENDOWMENTS. It was resolved on the motion of Councillor McCardle, seconded by Councillor Ormsby, that the Kawhia County Council be approached vith a view to ascertaining the probable' time of throwing open the Hariour Board endowments, which are tot\tiguous to the Waitomo County boundaries.
