TAUMARUNUI.

The Taumarunui Racing Club, is in the happy position of having a substantial balance in hand after paying all expenses in connection with their recent meeting. To celebrate the occasion of winding up affairs over the meeting, Mr H. de Vere Hunt tendered a social evening to the committee, stewards, and visitors. Guests to the number of about 40 sat down to the tables, and a most enjoyable time was spent. Dr. Cairns presided, and Mr C. J. Ryan occupied the vice-chair. The usual toasts were proposed, and responded to in a very hearty manner. Dr. Cairns, and Messrs Ryan, Beale, Carrington, Nagle, and Scotty were responsible for neat speeches, appropriate to the occasion, and the health of the " host and hostess," was drunk with musical honours. During the evening vocal items were well rendered by Messrs J. Dallas, Dunlop, Hickey and others. It is currently reported that the Representation Commissioners will readjust the boundaries of the electorate, and Mr C. J. Ryan has already been mentioned as a probable Parliamentary candidate for the proposed new district. Notwithstanding the state of the roads, Mrs Gaffey, a former resident of Taumarunui, accompanied by a lady friend, drove in a buggy from Ohakune to Taumarunui last week. This is a record performance, as it is the first time a vehicle has been driven right through. In some places the buggy had to be hoisted over landslips by means of ropes. King's Birthday was not attended with " King's weather " in the King Country. At Taumarunui heavy rain was experienced throughout the day, while at Piriaka there was a fall of snow.
