TAUMARUNUI.
Mr Tom. Moore, coach proprietor of Raurimu, had the misfortune to loose a valuablehorse the ether day, also to have nine others poisoned through eating wharnngi leaves.
An amusing example of our army officers' orthography was brought before me the other day. Reading through the discharge of a South African Constabulary private's papers, I found his occupation stated as a " glacier."
Fish are very plentiful in the Wangariui and Ongarue rivers near Taumarunui, and I hear of some good hauls. The trout here are much hardier, and better eating than the Rotorua fish, as the cold waters coming down from. Ruapehu are more suitable for them, than the still waters in the thermal district.
Guy Fawkes was in great evidence in Taumarunui. Unfortunately, the night turned out to be very wet, but that did not deter the children from having their bon-fires, for they were on every side of us, and crackers, rockets, Catherine wheels, blufe-devils, etc., galore. _ They enjoyed themselves thoroughly, and fortunately there were no casualties. Taumarunui suffers from a dearth of vegetables; those who -are unable to grow them can only get a few stale ones about once a week, and then they have no choice to select from.
A special train will now run from Oio to Taumarunui on Friday morning to allow those who desire, to visit the local races. It will return again to Oio in the evening. According to all accounts, it will be well patronised. A Glasgow paper just to hand states, that Mr Wm. Cairns, father of Dr. Cairns, of Taumarunui, has just retired, on full pay, from the managership of the Union Bank, Gatehouse of Fleet Mr Cairns entered the Bank at the age of 14, and has been in their employ for 59 years, and manager since 1856. When can such a paragraph be written about anyone in New Zealand, remaining in one service for 59 years?
