Mr Peter Barlow, for sortie time with the late Mr L. Cussen and Mr Alfred W. Cheal —who was associated with Mr Sims in laying out the Te Kuiti township—recently passed the Surveyors' Examination, and have received from the Surveyors' Board, their certificates of competency. Mr Andrew Pepene, son of Mr B. Pepene, has been gazetted as a Native interpreter, of the first grade. James George Berry has been appointed Captain of No. 2 company, Waikato Mounted Rifle Volunteers, his commission .dating from August 22nd, 1906. Captain Gilbert Mair, N.Z.C., has been posted to the Retired List, with his present rank. Mr Clement Couglilan has accepted the' duties of Hon. Secretary and Treasurer of the Taumarunui Cricket Clab.
Mr C. J. Bush has been conducting a series of Home Mission meetings, commencing last Friday at Raurimu, and on the following three, days, he visited Taumarunui, Matiere and Mangaroa. The Minister of Lands (Hon J. McNab), may be expected to -visit the King, Countxy early next February.
Mr Simmonds, Of Taumarunui, is building a large hall at that centre. There is some mention. of Dr Brownie starting practice in the Ohura district, where the settlers are said to have guaranteed. £3OO per annum.
Rev. T. G. Brooke preached at Taumarunui last Sunday morning and evening. The rev. gentleman is president of the N.Z. Methodist Conference.
. The Rev. S. Spencer gave, an interesting address at the rhissionary meeting in connection with the Anglican Synod, on Home Mission work, and pointed out the need of the work, and the difficulties that had to be contended with.
Inspector Middletott, of the Public Health Department, is to be stationed in the Waikato district, and, with Hamilton as his centre, will co-operate with the local authorities in regard to the improvement of sanitary matters generally. ; . Mr Jennings, M.H.R., speaking on the Appropriation Bill testified to the dissatisfaction of the Ohura settlers ,with the proportion allocated for their wants.
Mr A. K. Hayward, lately connected with this journal, left to-day for Auckland, where he takes over the editorship of an agricultural paper.
Miss Beswick, late of Te Aroha, arrived in Te Kuiti last Friday, and is now busily engaged organising music and painting classes. Mr Jas. Steel, late of the Auckland Weekly News, and N.Z. Herald, arrived at Te Kuiti last Monday to take over the editorial duties of this paper. Before leaving Auckland he was presented with a travelling bag, toilet case, pocket-book and pipe, by the sta;ff Of the previousiy : ; mentioned papers. .. , v ' Constable John.Lander pfTe Awamutu, has been appointed an Inspector under the Factories' Act. /.
