LATE LOCALS.

The Town School children are at present having a week’s holiday. Messrs W. Cooke & Co. have purchased the Clinton Sawmill from Mr W. E. L. Laugesen. We are informed that the contractors will begin the erection of the Freezing works at Mr Goodall’s shed this week. Prim-ess Victoria Patricia of Connaught is betrothed to the Tsar’s brother, the Grand Duke Michael Alexandro vitch. Mr James Cook, onetime manager of the National Bank in various parts of the Colony, died on Saturday. Mr Thomas Rose, Inspector of Post Offices, died suddenly on Saturday at the Thorndon bowling green, Wellington. 'lhe Waitham Orphanage at Christchurch was almost destroyed by fire on Saturday morning. The thirteen children in it had a narrow escape. The Victoria, from Sydney, arrived at Wellington yesterday. She experienced exceptionally heavy weather on the run across, and had a very trying time. The poll for the election of one Councillor to the vacancy on the County Council will be held at the Hapuk i Hall on Thursday, and is arousing considerable interest. The police raided a gaming school in Herbert Street, Wellington, on Saturday. As a result, twenty-four men were brought before the Court yesterday and fined £5 each, with costs. i At the meeting of the Directors/ of the Dsfiry Compauy held last Thursday ‘lt was resolved to pay 8d per lb for butter-fat till further notice. One or two other matters were left over for consideration at a fuller meeting. We have received a communication from Mr A. W. Rutherford, M.H.R., in which he states that the'Minister of Lands is making enquiries into the matter of sending a Shorthorn bull to this district, and also as regards lectures in pomology and veterinary surgery. in Kaikoura, by Government experts. The Hon. W. Hall-Jones, in acknowledging the receipt, from Mr A. W. Rutherford of the petition addressed to him by Mr F. Monk and other PuhiPuhisettlers, urging the necessity for a grant being made for construction of a portion of the PuhiPuhi road says that “ the matter of making provision for this work will remy earnest consideration in dealing with the current years’ Estimates for road, etc., works.” To-morrow ( Wednesday ) is Labour Day, and therefore a. public: holiday. Our readers hardly need reminding of the Bushmen’s Sports to be held in Takahanga Domain. This gathering is always an,enjoyable one, and to-morrow’s promises to be no exception to the rule. Capital fields will contest tiie various events, and a good day’s sport may confidently be expected. A ball will be held at the Drillshed in the evening, and should be very successful. The price for admission is five shillings for non-members, half-a-crown for members, and ladies free. On viewing Mr A. Cummings’s butcher shop on Friday evening, one could scarcely believe that it was not Christinas time, for the decorations of the establishment and the show of meat were really more than might be expected at this season of the year. The front of the shop and the verandah were profusely decorated with flowers, ferns, palms, evergreens, and Chinese lanterns, while the inside of the premises was filled with the primest of meat, comprising beef, veal, mutton, lamb, pork, hams, and a good variety of small goods. Judging by the large number of of customers present, Mr Cummings must have done good business.
