Labour Day was celebrated in most of the large cities on tie Continent without serious (,i--turbance, owing to the aiitnorities taking precautionary measures wherever demonstrations wore likely to prove disorderly. Some disordei occurred in t aris towards nightfall. Crowds of roughs hooted, and. m some cases stoned patrolling dragoons, and there were frequent scuttles w i t.i the police. Order was maint lined without, recourse to revolvers oi swords.
