THE KAIKOURA STAR KAIKOURA, APRIL 26, 1904. NOTES AND COMMENTS.

Mr W. G. Doyle invites, until Saturday next, tenders for felling 400 acres of bush. The Suburban School Committee election last night was the first to be contested for a number of years. The Brass Band, under Band Sergeant F. Cox, made a “ command ” appearance at last Friday's “ At Home ” at The Elms. Mr R. A. Chaffey and Mr John Rennie have been appointed members of the Assessment Court for the County of Kaikoura. Mr H. J. Barratt was elected a member of the Suburban School Committee last night for the twenty-sixth time. * Only one tender was received by the County Council for lease of Section 347 (near wharf), viz., that of Mr J. Goodall, at thirty shillings a year. It has been accepted, of course. The season for shooting native game commences next Sunday. As heretofore the Lyell creek water from the bridge downward to the mouth is a preserve for wild fowl. The Waipapa road from the main road, 20 chains South of the Clarence bridge, to the Miller stream and from thence to the George stream (Harkaway Flat) is declared a County road. A series of exceedingly enjoyable social gatherings—“ At Homes”— took place at “The Elms” last week, the motif being to afford friends, co-workers in church (Presbyterian) affairs, and others, an opportunity of formally saying an revoir to Miss Flo-Bullen ere she becomes Mi’s Nixon tomorrbw. Miss Bullen, Miss Flo Bullen, anil Miss E. Bullen did “ the honors of the castle” with exquisite grace, Mrs Gilbert Anderson joining the house party before the conclusion of the week’s functions. The colour of the entertaining was of subdued brilliance, there being a deep wealth of tone in the reception accorded all, which was rich in heartiness. The guests included friends from Wellington, Nelson, Northern Marlborough and Canterbury. The array of wedding presents, even on Friday last, was a splendid collection, silverware predominating. The Elms conservatory contains, at the present time, a charming display of floral beauty, delighting the eye of beholders. The social held in the Drill Hall last week in aid of St. Peter's Church Organ Fund was a Stirling success. Mrs C. Wood, who organised the entertainment and directed the carrying out of it, deserves warm praise for the highly satisfactory results obtained in every way—financially and as an evening s divertisement. The programme presented afforded general satisfaction. The contributors of musical items were Mrs Wood, the Misses Close, Palmer, Blathwayt, Flower, White, Renner, Messrs Orange, West, Fk. Flower and F. Cox. Miss Greta Wood made one of the hits of the evening with her cleverly recited contribution. All the tableaux four in number —were very well presented, Mr Fk. Flower being an able “stage manager.” There were various “side shows”—work and produce stalls and fairy well, etc.—which proved aids to swell the receipts—the total being about £2B. A telegraph service, organised by Mr A. G. Campbell as Electrician-in-Chief, did good business with Mr A. Robertson and Master C. Renner as operators. Light refreshments were provided and handed round, the work of the “ refectioners ” being thoroughly appreciated. The financial outcome of Mrs Wood’s zealous efforts mean that the full amount required to obtain a pipe organ for the church is now assured, one of the make known as the “ Positive ”• being, we are informed, the description in view.
