The concert to be held in the evening promises to be a success.

The Brass Band, conducted by Bandmaster T. Cooke, gave a very successful open-air concert on Christmas afternoon. The selections were all played in a pleasing manner. A collection was made on behalf of the Band funds. Air Sutton, Rabbit Agent, wrote to the County Council drawing attention to Californian thistle growing near both the Iron Gate and Blue Duck creeks. It was decided to have the matter seen to. Cr Boyd stated that heavy salting or the use of coal tar would destroy the weed. At the meeting of the County Council last week a letter from the Inspector of Telegraphs was read, asking the Council if it would f guarantee £lO a year for five years or the construction hnd maintenance of the Post Office-Wharf telephone, the work being contingent oh the availability of funds. It was decided, on Cr Renner’s motion, to give the guarantee. ' Summarised, the Russo-Japanese situation is that Japan’s naval preparations are complete, and she is calmly waiting 1 the Czar’s reply* the time limit for wlHthjsJanuaryjg 7th. There ar* hopeful signs thatl Britain’s* representations at St J Petersburg will lead to peace® though the Russian newspaper.® evince more animosity to Englanc® than Japan. China is making ac-” tive preparations for war. The Colony’s local half-million loan has been considerably oversubscribed. This shows that the New Zealanders are self-reliant and have ample confidence in the Colony’s stability. The resources of New Zealand fully warrant such repose. The result of the appeal to the money lenders of the land is a pleasing “ Christmas box ” to the Colonial Treasurer—the Rt. Hon. Richard Seddon. Congratulations to him politically and personally!
