KAIKOURA RACING CLUB. Annual meeting. Patron: A. W. Rutherford, Esq., M.H.R. President: Mr G. Renner. Vice-Presidents: Dr Haise-Francis, Messrs A. J. Murray, W. Trolove and F. Parsons. Judge : Mr F. Parsons ; Clerk of Scales : Mr J. W. Davidson ; Clerk of Course : Mr H. Lovell; Starter : Mr J. Hornei-; Handicapper : Mr Ulic Shannon ; Treasurer: Mr B. Burland; Secretary: Mr H. Schroder; Stewards: Messrs B. Bin laud, J. Peoples, G. Garrett, G. itenner, F. Monk, A. G. Miskin, F. r arsons and A. W. Collyns. Attendance at any public gathering out doors depends so much on the weather that the body favored with dry atmospheric conditions has a great help in that. Saturday was not, however, an ideal day, an overcast sky and keen Southerly breeze being anti-Summer. Rain kept off until the last race was run, and then what had threatened for the most of the afternoon materialised. First a spit or two, increasing, with the waning day, into a heavy downpour. The attendance, according to gate returns, was rather better than last year. Nothwithstanding the increase in value of the stakes, the aggregate of the fields in the eight events this year is less than in 1902, though, taken as a whole, the class of horses may be regarded as rather better. Y et the inducement offered has not been productive of the results anticipated. The “ sport ” was also disappointing in some respects. It is true that there were three really good finishes — one a clinker —but in some of the other events there was a suspicion of “a some thing,” but nothing thift-i.-. s-'i-'.ed npou I t I ",' 1 duce, with any oi-grpe of -access, a solid ‘•carpeting” oi the person the performance of whose horse was viewed with suspicion. The Hurdle Race promised at flag-fall to be au. interesting event, but it proved very, hollow. The contest for the Maiden made amends. The winner, Greenstone, is a very fine son of Mauser, showing plenty of substance. It was bred by Mr E. S. Rogers. Fritilene would probably have won the First Trot had she not lost a lot of ground through breaking in the turn for home, having at that stage a lead of about 20 yards. Then came the chief inducement of the meeting—the Kaikoura Stakes. A field of 0 faced the starter, but, as Single Event turned sulky and would not budge when the flag fell, the contest resolved itself into one between a quintette. It was a pretty race, and Mr Lascelles’s handsome little mare won amid cheers, which were renewed on weight being declared. The Hack Handicap produced another field of six, and resulted in a big surprise. Fairywood, ably handled, beat three much-fancied ones in Majority, Circus Girl and Enoho. The Publicans’ Handicap was a disappointing race. Only four in it—one hung to at the start and was not afterwards, it would appear, “on the job,” and another influencecf by sexual trouble—left Khaki a bloodless victory. Doctor G. made no race of his field in the Second Trot, while Van Wilkes (penalised 7 secs.) did not appeal' in the same mood as in the- first event. The County Cup attracted a field of six and resulted in the race of the duy. The half-dozen horses, with the beautiful silk colors of the respective riders, preIsented the equine picture of the pneetiug as the animals sped past |the Judge’s box. They ran locked ■together for over a furlong, but a ■fit of “jockeying” at the RVestern bend resulted in KulMina running off. Lepanto and K’awa soon after were engaged ■e a merry duet, but the mare ■truck a flag-pole and was partially ■nocked out. Lepanto swept Mjtind the Eastern turn into the ■traight with the race won—it was Manning had, however, dfeen awake on Lady Babbie and Mot oii terms with Lepanto near ■he target. A great set-to up the (Straight resulted in Babbie being Winded, cleverly, a winner by a Jung neck. The mare’s success was RBjled with delight, but it is due to jfWffcqito to give him credit for jEMMMg out the finish (at a difvery gamely. Out
of this event there has arisen an unpleasant incident. A protest was lodged against the winner on the score of being trained by an unlicensed trainer. This was heard by 6 out of 8 Stewards (the absentees not being informed of the meeting) and without the owner of Babbie having any knowledge of the objection. The protest w as upheld without dissent but another meeting of Stewards (7 present) was held last evening, when evidence was taken. By 8 to 1 the protest was sustained, 3 Stewards declining to vote. Of course there will be an appeal. Here it may be said the public care very little —if anything—for technicalities. So long as there be clean, honest racing, and well contested finishes, at least 90 per cent of the spectators are satisfied. Having got such in Lady Babbie’s efforts there is much public dissatisfaction at the turn events have taken, particularly in the light of “ suspicions.” Of the non-winners (those failing to get a first place), Circus Girl, Ngarara and Majority give promise of success hereafter. Had Circus Girl not been shin sore it appears certain that she would have won the Hack Handicap. The other two are yet green. All the officials worked energetically. The more prominent were Messrs F. Parsons, J. Horner, B. Burland, J. W. Davidson, H. Schroder, H. Lovell and J. Peoples. The Starter and Secretary both made a very creditable fii'st appearance. The course shows an improvement on last year, but much remains to be done before the management can rightly regard matters with satisfaction. Mr and Mrs McCullough merited credit for their catering. Following are particulars of the racing:— Hurdle Race of £25 with sweep of 10s added, £3 to second horse h-oai, stake; . IJ> miles, over , six flights of hurdles. C. Khaki and Reverse took the first hurdle together; but from the cutting the quartette ran along to the next obstacle in a well-strung out The top-weight declined the second jump, running inside, and Reverse was pulled off owing to her breaking down. Sovereign held Single Event safe for the remainder of the distance, winning by two lengths. Time, 3.17 8-5 ths. A protest against Sovereign for an alleged cross was dismissed. Eulalie, Circus Girl and Tawa were the first away when eventually the field were despatched, the others following in straggling order, Miss Cloe last of all. Circus Girl led Tawa down the back stretch, Greenstone being third and Eulalie next. At the far turn Circqs Girl had a clear two lengths’ lead, but from here Greenstone came with a fine run, and a splendid struggle from below the distance post resulted in a half-length victory for Greenstone. Tawa was a poor third, and Eulalie fourth. Time, I. First Trot of £lO, with sweep of 10s added, £2 to second horse from stake; weight 125t.14 miles. H. Fritilene was in command before half a mile had been covered, and held a considerable advantage on
the completion of the first lap. Van Wilkes cut down the field I early and was next past the post, followed by Simon R., Nepher and Doctor G. The latter gained third ■position from Simon R. at the Southern end, and Fritilene making a'mistake at the entrance to the straight Van Wilkes assumed the lead and won by fifty yards, the same distance between Fritilene and Doctor G. Time, 4.47. KjfikoußA Stakes of £4O, with sweep of 10s added, £5 to second horse from stake ; 1 mile. T. Lascelles’ br m Lady Babbie, syrs, (Gipsy Grand Fairymaid), 9.0, Manning ... 1 H. Khaki and Kulnina were the quickest off the mark, and showed slightly in advance of Lady Babbie round to the seaward side. Lady Babby then joined the leaders, and on turning for home was in front. Easily holding her position to the finish, she won by two and a-half lengths; Lepanto third, Kulnina fourth. Single Event refused to start. Time, 1.53. Er’filene assumed charge from Nancy Lee within the first halfmile, and passing the post the second time her nearest attendant was Simon R., Doctor G. next. Dante and Icona had previously pulled out, and Van Wilkes followed suit when the lap was completed. Doctor G. passed Simon Bi in the second round and soon after entering on the final cellared Fritilene. From this out the positions Were as indicated, eighty yards separating Doctor G. from Fritilene, at the finish, Simon R. about another fifty yards behind. Nancy Lee did not finish. Time, 7.51. ' County Cup of £23, with sweep of 19s added, £3 to second horse from stake ; 7 furlongs. E. Wallace’s ch g Lepanto, aged, (Corinth), 11.7, Death ... 1 J. After a lot of delay, the field were sent away with Artgowan ahd Lepanto in front and Lady Babbie tailing-up. Kulnina ran off at the cutting. Lady Babbie began to draw on the two firstnamed from the four-furlongs’ post, and 'had run into third place just
before heads were turned for home. One of the gamest struggles seen here then ensued, the little mare catching Lepanto at the distance, and fighting every inch of the way, gained the victory in the last few strides by a necK. Enoho, two lengths away, was a length in front of Artgowan. Time, 1.38. On protest, Babbie was distanced on. the ground that she had been trained by an unlicensed person.
