SERIOUS BUSH FIRES. SETTLERS BURNT OUT. MANY BUILDINGS IN DANGER Napier, March 17 Serious fires are raging in the bush districts. Several settlers have been burnt out in Makeritu and Blackburn. March IS High wind has spread bush fires widely i n Southern part of Hawke’s Bay. Some of the sleepets were burnt on railway line near Ormondville and delayed the express an hour and a half. Bartholomew’s sawmill at Takapan has been destroyed. The Sash and Door Company’s mills at Piripiri, and some of the workmen’s houses, four cottages at Gannan’s Siding, a house at Ashley, Clinton House at Makeritu, a house and woolshed at Blackburn, a woolshed and several large homesteads at Norsewood, and several sawmills are threatened. Much sturdy bush has been swept away. The full extent of the loss is unknown, communication being difficult.
