To stand this season qt the Owner’s stables the Thoroughbred Horse BEN FARLEY (Sire, Ben Trovato —Dam, Psyche). Ben Farley is a very handsome horse, seven years old, of a golden chestnut colour, with Stockwell markings, standing about 16hands, and Iris a beautiful temper. He is of rare build, and possesses a constitution and legs of iron. He was a highly successful racehorse, and whilst on the turf showed gameness and stamina combined with great staying and weight carrying capabilities. His performances are as under : As a 2-year-old, after placed performances in the C.J.C. Lyttelton Plate, Richmond Plate and Russley Plate Handicaps, he won the Maiden Two-year-old Handicap at the DuncrLi,ll J- G. AU'umn Meeting, putting down a field or seven. As a 3-year-dld he. started • running a dead heat with Battery, to whom he was conceding 161 b, in tile Flying Handicap at the Ohoka and Eyreton J. C. Annual Meeting, beating five others; and at the - Canterbury J. C. Summer Meeting, won the Hornby Whiter Handicap, with Sst 91b, finishing in front of ten others. At the Canterbury J. C. Autumn Meeting he put down a strong field o£ eleven in the Yaldhurst Welter Handicap, carrying Bst 121 b. As a 4-year-old. at the South Canterbury J.C. Spring Meeting, won the Shorts Handicap with Bst 91b, beating six others. At the Canterbury J.C. Metropolitan Spring Meeting, carrying top weight, Ost 51b, suffered a halflength defeat in the Epsom HighWeight Handicap, finishing in front of thirteen others ; and on the second day, again carrying top weight, Ost 91b, was beaten a neck only in the Avon Welter Handicap, putting down a strong field of fourteen. At the Ashburton R.C. Summer Meeting, won the New Year’s Gift Handicap, carrying Bst 111 b, giving two others 221 b and 311 b ; following this up the second day by winning the Tinwa Id Handicap with Bst 91b, beating Huku, Suzannah and Skirmisher. He next i.tarted. at the Canterbury J.C. Summer Meeting, where lie secured a good doubleiby winning the chief event each day, the races being—the Midsummer Handicap of £550, beating Skobeloff, Djin Djin, Malatua, Strathnairn, Dundas, Huku, Haria and Cameo, doing the mile and a half in the exceptionally fast time of 2min 36 2-ssec ; and on the second, the St. Albans Handicap of £250, carrying Bst 61b, putting down Rochester, The Spinner, Benzoin, Jupiter and Skirmisher. Psyche, Ben Farley’s dam, was a successful racing mare, winning with all weights up to list 71b. She is the dam of a number of winners, including Lady Sockburn, Alcestis, Clandeboye, Pleasure Seeker, Antigone, Greek Maid, and Vogengang, the latter the hero of over twenty races, among which, were the C. J. C. Middle Park Stakes, C.J.C. Champagne Stakes, and W ellington Cup. She was got by Anteros (imp.) from Atalania, who, besides leaving Psyche, was also the dam of Pungawerawera, who left us such high-class racehorses as Tetford, Krupp, Brigadier, St. James, Oscillator, and Crackshot (winner of the Auckland R.C. Handicap, Auckland and Canterbury Cups). Ben Farley’s sire, Ben Trovato, was got from Apremont from Flattery (full sister to Welcome Jack), by Traducer from Miss Flat. 'Bred as Ben Farley, is he cannot fail to be a successful sire, and he also has the advantage of being perfectly sound, a quality he inherits from his grandsire, Apremont, none of whose stock it is said have been known to break down whilst in training. What he would have been if influenza had not overtaken him (which caused his retirement) it is hard to say, as it was he proved himself more than capable of holding his own in the big handicaps run on metropolitan courses. ■ Fee, £2 10s, payable Ist January, 1903; guaranteg, £4; .groomage. ss, payable at first service.
