THE ANGLO-BOER WAR. BOER PRISONERS. London, March 9 The steamer Bavarian has sailed from Durban for India with I,OCO prisoners. A further batch of Boer prisoners at Hawkins Island, Bermuda, as a protest against continuance of the war, took the oath of allegiance to Britain. A party of other prisoners thereupon attempted to drown them in the Great Sound, but the military guard frustrated the attempt. . DISCUSSION IN PARLIAMENT. During debate in the Commons on army estimates, Brodrick, Secretary for War, said that after crisis had passed in South Africa it would probably be necessary to retain 15,000 regulars in the country. Robertson, K.C., Liberal member for Dundee, commenting on published statements that the Colonies wished the war should be fought to bitter end, said he hoped the Government would not follow Chamberlain’s example and grovel at the feet of the Colonies. Would the Colonies, asked Robertson, bear one-fifth of cost of the war ? Brodrick said he disdained to reply,- but he was confident Chamberlain wofild not meet Premiers of the Colonies in any such spirit. They could never forget the exceptional services Colonies had rendered without pressure or invitation. MISCELLANEOUS NEWS Since 4th inst. 35 prisoners have been captured at Reitz. Natal Assembly strongly favours compulsory military service in the Colony. Thirteen hundred head of stamps are working on the Rand, but native labor is scarce.
