The Manawatu Standard indicates that there is a cabal in the Ministry between the Seddonites and the Wardites, the followers of the latter numbering over 20. During a debate in the Cape Parliament on the provisions of the Treason Bill, one member said it was only natural for Messrs Sauer and Merriman to oppose the measure and get rid of martial law as soon as possible. Mr Merriman’s Conomitiee were chiefly in gaol or on bail, and Mr Sauer’s Committee were entirely in gaol. ‘What for ?’ innocently enquired another Member. ‘A little crime of high treason,’ was the reply.
