THE KIAKOURA STAR KAIKOURA, MARCH 30, 1900. Notes and Comments
One of the “ humours” of yesterday's cricket freely commented upon was the success of tbe “ two fat men,” one on either side, their respective achievements being urged as the triumph of Temperance over Prohibition. It certainly is notable tbat the top scorers on tbe respective sides are Bonifaces; both are, it is remarked, very temperate men. Mr John Monk narrowly escaped death at the Kahautara Bluff on Tuesday. He was engaged with a party on the works and went forward on to a projection which had been resisting efforts at dislodgment, when the earth slipped away, carrying him with it. He was knocked about very considerably, chiefly about the head—his face was sevetely cut —and waist. He was brought into Kaikoura and taken to the Commercial Hotel, where he has been well and veiy kindly attended to. Tbe Brass Band played a. number of acceptable, selections iu a very pleasing manner, at the cricket match yesterday afternoon enlivening the pioceedings thereby. The appeal to tbe public for assistance was a very gratifying one, amounting to over £s—including generous subscriptions from tbe Messrs Wood and D. Rutherford. It is an imposition to charge import duty on musical instruments obuined by amateurs whose only aim is to entertain the public. Tbe Custom House was never intended for that purpose.
The marriage of Mr D. Haswell and Miss Gerrand, last week, attracted a large attendance at tit. Paui’s Church —which bad been specially decorated for the occastou. The solemn and interesting ceremuby was devoutly performed by the Rev. Mr McAra. As the bride, escorted by her lather and attended by Miss Ruth McAra as bridesmaid, entered the church, a gladsome peal iroin the organ, played by Mrs tiandtord, was heard. The bride wote a very handsome gown of silk lustre, wreath of orange blossoms, and ved; the bridesmaid being, also, very neatly attired in a becoming costume, lhe bridegroom was attended by Mr T. Haswell, his brother. The lady members of the choir were present in iorce, and, led by Mrs tiandtord, sung appropriate hymns. At the conclusion of tho marriage ceremony Rev. Mr McAra presented the bride with a beautiful Bible from the members of the Kohai Church, the sacred volume bearing a suitable inscription. Tho bride ana bridegroom, together with members ol the two laindies, then drove off, amid cheenug, hearty good wishes and a shower ot rice, to the residence ol the bride’s parents, where tbe breakf last bad been provided, lhe health of the newly-weuded pair was suitably * toasted, ano the happy couple letc in lhe afternoon lor the Auuth on their honeymoon, they were the recipients ot a targe number ol vaiuab>e presents, ot a varied order, the whole consiitutj lug a considerable measure ut good wishes lor the happiness and prosperity ol Mr and Mrs D. Haswell.
