THE KAIKOURA STAR KAIKOURA, JULY 29, 1898, Notes and Comments.

‘ This is too good for Winter,’ observe discussers of the weather. The atmospheric conditions are certainly exceedingly fine. Several letters to the Editor held over ; others are couched in terms of far too strong a nature to admit of their publication in the star in their present form. A somewhat rare denizen of the sea, in the form of a small sun-fish, was found washed ashore here a few days ago by Mr Paget Hodgman. The fortnightly meeting of the Mutual Improvement Society will be held on Tuesday evening. A ‘ paper ’ on Volcanic Disturbances, with illustrations, will be given by the Rev. Mr Livescy. It has been found necessary to postpone the Ploughing Matches for a week, so that instead of taking place on Thursday next they will do so on Thursday week— August 11th. Entries will close on Saturday August 6th, instead of tomorrow evening.

Mr Wark advises Mr Borland that the champion collie dog Young England (sire of Mr Burland’s fashionably bred collie Merrie England) was run over and killed in the North Island. Mr Wark sold Youug England to a Napier breedera short time ago.

It is stated that Mr G. S. Mcßae is leaving Kaikoura and going to the North Island, having taken a farm in the New I'lymouth district. We regret that Kaikoura is to lose Mr and Mrs Mcßae ; we doubt not that this place will always Have their good wishes. The Marlborough Express of July 18 says : —The survey of the Starborougn Estate for sub-division into allotments will be fairly in hand this week. Mr Carkeek is already on the ground, and Mr Wilson, with a party or four men, arrived trom the West Coast on Saturday, and will start work immediately. It is understood that five survey parties are to operate, and that three have already been arranged for.

—Tenders for County work close tc morrow.

—Machine shearers wanted at fcwyncomle on Wednesday. —B. Maxton sale at 2 tomorrow: right to cut flax, furniture, etc., etc.
