AMERICAN-SPANISH WAR. AMERICANS LAND ON PUERTO RICO. SPANIARDS TAKEN BY SURPRISE. SPAIN SUES FOR PEACE. McKinley personally FAVORABLE. CONSULTS HIS CABINET. WASHINGTON, July 27 A contingent of the expedition to Puerto Rico has occupied the village of Quanica, on South coast of the island. The Americans met with slight resistance, but the Spaniards were taken by surprise. It is expected that San Juan, on the North coast, will be first attacked. MADRID, July 27 Acting under instructions from Sagasta, M. Cambon, French Ambassador at Washington, made request to American authorities for cessation of hostilities and opening up negotiations for peace. Replying, McKinley
intimated that personally he was favourable to discussion of terms of peace, and will consult his Cabinet.
