THE KAIKOURA STAR KAIKOURA, MARCH 8, 1898 Notes and Comments.
Leader, Protean Points, and other matter crowded out.
Mr Boyens has just completed some improvements and repairs to St. James’ Church, Kohai. Mr and Mrs W. Trolove have generously presented St. James’ with a very handsome font. ‘ Ambassadors of Commerce ’ are various and multifarious. One of the most popular is Mr Duncan Cameron, the general representative of the famous Zeaiandia Boot Factory, who has just paid Kaikoura another visit—in the interests of his firm in particular, and generally of those who say ‘ Hail Zeaiandia 1’ The Wellington Guardian of last week has for its cartoon (entitled * The Last Round’) a prize ring set-to between ‘Old Scotia’ (J. Duthie) and ‘Young N.Z. ’ (K. C. Kirk). The former seems a bit stiff on it, and the latter stands rather limp. This is suggestive of the Guardian's attitude towards the respective candidates —it approves neither.
The Rangiora Standard of last Wednesday says : —The dearth <’f feed, consequent npon a protracted length of fine weather, has had a bad effect upon the price of stock in all of the Canterbury markets, but with the occasional showers that the North Canterbury district has been benefitted with since the New Year prices are beginning to improve. At the Rangiora markets yesterday this was shown.
Mr J. S. Sim returned from the North yesterday, whither he had gone to obtain some sheep for the station property (Grasmere, Malvern district) be has lately purchased. He bought some 5,000 from various Wairau and Avratere properties, and sixty-five stud sheep of the best Gibson strain in North Marlborough. The farmer will be driven through Kaikoura, the latter are to be shipped by steamer ftom Picton to Lyttelton.
Notice is given that an extraordinary general meeting of the Dairy Company is to be held on the 19th inst. Should any shareholder desire to move alteration in the Articles of Association it will be necessary to give notice thereof to the Secretary on or before Friday next in order to advertise it. The minute respecting alterations which Directors propose to make, in view of increased supplies next season, is as follows: —Mr Cooke had estimated the cost of erecting a lean-to, 20x12, to accommodate engine and boiler, and of rearranging and adding to the shelving in the curing room so as to increase the capacity by some 80 per cent, if not more, at about £6O, perhaps less. To this would have to be added cost of removing and reerecting boiler and engine and then there would be cost of new vat and press.
