CRICKET.

A (5-aside practice game was played on Saturday - Captain v. DeputyCaptain. Barton (Captain) with 107 not out an d Whittle (Deputy) with 37 were the highest contributors for their respective sides. Bartou played a dashing innings ; after putting up 50 lie gave a chance or two. Whittle’s score was the result of very nice and careful play. Barrett, C. Kenner. Fk.

Flower, Fk. Bullen and Fk. Renner obtained their runs in good style. Scores : Deputy Captain’s Team :

Captain’s Team :

Barton’s average for the season is an enviable one, viz : 261 per innings. His scores are 83 not out, 24. 50 not out, and 107 not out.

Several of the eleven chosen to represent Kaikoura against Amuri, at Culverden, on Saturday, find it inconvenient or impossible to go down. Though the first emergency man goes, there are still three vacancies in the team to be filled. The eight are as follows : F. Barrett, Fk. Bullen, P. Trolove, IV. Trolove, J. Way, E. Whittle, C. Wood, W. Boyens. Part of the difficulty in constituting the team is the trouble about transit. Could this be satisfactorily arranged, and less time required over the match, the matter would be more readily adjusted. Stoddart’s men richly deserve their defeat in the last test match. Several of them appeared to have emulated one another in showing how catches can be dropped. When Darling had scored 17 he put a ball into Briggs’ hands, and the little Lancashire man lost it—(direct cost 143 runs !) and subsequently missed another catch. When Darling had scored 58 he skied one nearly to the boundary, but Hayward, who got under it, let it slip through his. fingers. Ranji missed Worrall badly. A ball was skied Ranji ran for and got under it, but carefully dropped it—(the report says I miserably mulled it is nearer the mark.) This, it is stated, was such a terrible shock to the Englishmen that several of them collapsed—lying down and resting. The field fell back to let Ranji make the catch—but he didn’t, he proved a ‘ butter-finger.’ He was suffering from an acute attack of * barrack-algia.’
