S at nr <1 ay. § LONDON, March 3 Reuler’s correspondent nt Tienstin reports that Germans are securing most of the contracts and pushing trade wherever possible in China. Americans, also, in consequence of their through railway freights, are enabled to successfully compete with the British where Russian influence overshadows Britain in Northern China. Lord Selborne, Parliamentary Secy, to Colonial Office, speaking at Bradford, said the country were unanimous that war would have been too dear a price to pay for British rights in Madagascar, but that the Govt, were absolutely determined that British rights in China should not be nullified or violated. With regard to the Niger dispute it was intended to imitate France in brilliant audacity and tenacity. TIMARU, March 4 An old identity, Robert Taylor, died in hospital today, aged 87. He came from Hobart to Wellington early in the forties and thence to Lyttelton before the first four ships. He was a builder, and helped to build early Wellington and Lyttelton. He was an old Freemason and father of Foresters here.
