RACING.

Kaikoura Boxing Day Meeting.

Judge : A. S. Collins, Esq. Stewards: Messrs T. Boyd, A. Miskin, W. Laugesen, W. Trolove, 11. Whitty, T. Whitty, J. Prince. Starter : Mr Renner. Clerk of Course : Mr 11. Schroeder. Clerk of Scales : Mr J. W. Davidson.

Handicappers : Messrs B. Burland, H. Schroeder and Renner. Secretary and Treasurer : Mr B. B. Burland.

Up to about 11 o’clock the weather on Wednesday was a repetition of that on last Boxing Day, but thereafter it became worse. A slight drizzle for a short time before 12 o’clock, was succeeded, from 2 p.m., onwards by an almost continuous drizzle from the south east —the fall being heavy at times. This militated against the attendance, which did not exceed 400, all told, at any time, and it was diminished as the afternoon wore on. The proceedings were not, in consequence of the weather, as enjoyable as they otherwise would have been. All the officials worked well, Messrs Burland, J. W. Davidson and H. Schroeder being the more industrious. Mr Collins ably filled the Judge’s box. Mr C. Wilson had the course matters as satisfactorily arranged as possible. Mr Gray was unable to act as Starter, owing to indisposition. The racing was generally indifferent, or, rather, the finishes were, except in the last event on the programme. The race for the title race of the day the Purse—was deprived of much of its interest when Leo was injudiciously handled just at the stage when occasion did not demand the effort made. However Contractor’s owner was not begrudged his victory, Mr Burilip and his horse being lustily cheered when weight was declared. The Steward’s Handicap was a poor duet. Contractor should assuredly have lost on the protest, because be most distinctly crossed Erica within the prescribed tw o lengths. The decision in the case was, no doubt, one of equity on the merits of the two horses, but quite erroneous from a strictly legal reading of racing laws. The contest for the Ladies’ Bracelet afford the spectators ample compensation for having remained to * see the play out.’ They witnessed a repetition of the splendid struggle which took place in Mr H. Mackie’s paddock in 18s6 between Miss Clyde, Sam Slick, and Parihaka (finishing in that order) when a sheet would have covered the trio. So on Wednesday for the Bracelet, in which Hard Case had the hard luck to again —as last December occupy second place. The victory of Leo and his owner in the ‘ honors event ’ of the day was well received, and the pair were accorded applause from the ladies as Mr Schroeder escorted them to the Judge, cheers following Mr Davidson’s intimation at the scales that all was right. Const. Smart’s duties were light; Mr T. Whitty conducted the Publican's Booth satisfactorily; ami Mr Hitchcock catered successfully at the Refreshment Booth; the N. Z. Tweed Coy’s, and Mr H. Howard’s Fancy Goods Stalls were fairly patronised. Particulars of the racing : MAIDEN PLATE of £5,

Miskin’s ch g Leo, lest, owner 2 A. Prior’s ch g Hard Case, lost, S. Clark 3 The trio started evenly the first time of asking, Contractor and Hard Case at once making the pace a cracker, with Leo close up. In this order they passed the box. An effort was then mistakenly made by Leo’s rider to get inside. In this he was disappointed, and suffered in consequence, having to pull up and go outside, several lengths being lost and Leo put out of his stride. Along the back stretch Contractor assumed a strong lead, which he maintained to the finish, winning very easily by 8 or 10 lengths. Leo came gamely, but whatever his chances may have been they were thrown away by the error above referred to. STEWARDS’ HANDICAP of £B, Once round. Nomination ss, acceptance 3s. W. Buvnip's b g Contractor, 11st ylbs (including 71b penalty), Purdham 1 A. Miskin’s ch m Erica, gst lolbs, owner ... ... ... ... 2 Leo 12.4, Hard Case 10.9, Riley 9.7 scratched.

The pair got away together, but a few ! yards after passing the post—-within 100 1 yards of the start —Contractor crossed I in front of Erica, within 2 lengths of the j mare, and deprived her of inside num- 1 ing. At the eastward bend she ran off, ■ but was brought on again, only to chase ' Contractor home. A protest was lodged, I but the objection was disallowed. The j majority of the Stewards were agreed ; that a cross occurred, but did not think it effected the result in any way, and so ’ dismissed the protest. HACK RACE of £5, Once round ; w.f.a. Clark ... ... ... ... 2 Miss Wilson's ch g Hippo, lost ylbs, A. Gray 3 Contractor (12.2) and Erica (9.7) also started. The quintette were sent off on perfectly even terms, but Hard Case quickly assumed command, with Hippo, Leo, Contractor and Erica in the order named. The positions were maintained until entering the straight. At the target the victory of Hard Case was proclaimed, but Leo was being ridden with better judgment, and. getting his head in front at the distance, a desperate finish was fought out between Leo, Hard Case and Hippo, the top-weight just getting home, with Hippo on the I girths of the second horse. It was a rattling conclusion. Decimal won a Hurry Skurry from two others, and the remaining spectators dispersed.
