New Year’s Day Sports.

The following handicaps have been declared : New Year’s Handicap:

Mile Run :

Anticipations by ‘Proteus.’

My ‘ tips ’ lor tbc Boxing Day races were viewed by some of tbc knowing ones as being all at sea, yet tbc critics were so and not I. The results gave me virtually three firsts—straight out so in two events, while in tbe other my selection did not go out, the winner turning up in my second choice. Thus may 1 claim to have spotted a treble. 1 don’t expect to be as successful with regard to the New Year’s Day Sports. A field of fourteen for tbe chief event takes some picking. The two scratch men, if at all fit, will be very dangerous. Last year’s winner (my choice on that occasion) is again well in through the inclusion of the two cracks on the mark, otherwise he must have gone there, and 1 expect to sec him make a big bid for victory. Turnbull has always disappointed rue in the 440, otherwise I should regard him as the probable winner. The middle division comprises men who have performed well on various occasions, but somehow 1 dont look for the winner to come from its ranks, Gibson being the one from whom I expect most. The trio of limit men is said to contain the winner of the Handicap. This is held to be a moral for Waterworth. He has a brother who is a reputed flyer, and he, himself, has done some good trials on tbe track. Should he run up to form shown by him I anticipate that he will emulate tbe performance of J. W. Davidson, who in 1891 won the event straight out with three firsts. Waterworth is expected to rival this. I am not so sanguine, but still expect biin to carry off the event. H. Smart on his running in the boys races here. I expect to see him beat more than be is beaten by, but it is asking one of his years too much to euter the lists agaiust such men as Close, Murphy, and some of tbc others. Should, he win I will be the first to congratulate him by doing so before hand! My anticipation is Waterworth 1, Murphy ‘2, Gibson 3.

For the Walk I shall select Hislop 1, Prince -2, L. Laugesen 3. The Mile Run has a nice entry, and tbe Handicap is a good one, though 1 cannot understand why Melbuish has not got a few yards more —say up to 90 ; the handicappers can, I fell sure, justify their adjustment. 1 expect to see a big struggle between the two ‘Fred’s’ and Beatty, with the finish thus: Cox 1, Gibson *2, Beatty 3, though it is just possible Melbuish may upset my anticipations. Should be do so 1 will heartily congratulate him. He is a ‘ pluckton ’ 1 am fully aware.
