Sir M. Feu ton, general manager of South Eastern Railway Coy, bitterly opposes proposal to appoint Eddy Chairman of the Coy. Committee of London shareholders of Bank N. Z. recommends holders of shares in the Colony not to pay call until a full and accurate account of the assets and liabilities is submitted. The Committee are consulting Counsel as to validity of call, and asks Colonial shareholders to subscribe Is per share towards expenses.
English wheat market is lifeless; Continental inactive; American declining.
Lord Churchill is seriously ill, and his condition is causing bis friends considerable anxiety. He is paralysed on one side and unable to recognise his friends.

Washington : Admiral Walker, deputed by United States Govt to counteract British influence in favour of Queen of Hawaii, in bis report to Senate, states presence of British warships in Hawaiian waters imperils American influence, and that British are only waiting opportunity in absence of American cruisers to land troops to support Royalists against Republicans. Senator Gallinger moved in Senate that invitation be sent to Canada, asking her to consent to annexation to the United States. Matter referred to a Committee. PARIS, Dec 23 The case against Captain Drefus, of the French artillery staff, who was arrested on a charge of selling secret military plans to foreign spies, rested on a document stolen from the German Embassy. The German Minister threatened to leave Paris if the document was used. Hence the trial was conducted privately. Defrus has been sentonced to incarceration for life in some fortified place, and ordered to pay costs of prosecution. The Court sentenced a German lieutenant to 5 years’ imprisonment on a charge of espionage. SHANGHAI, Dec 22 In order to prevent occupation of Pekin, Chinese Govt have seriously begun negotiations with Japan for peace.
