Napier: Father Kerrigan, formerly of Wellington and Blenheim, died, on Monday, aged 55, from bronchitis, after very brief illness. An American was killed by a circular saw. In his obituary notice it was stated, that he was ‘a good citizen, an upright man an ardent patriot, but of limited information with regard to circular saws.’
Captain Fairchild, of the Hinemoa, returned from Southern lighthouses and West Coast, states that the weather experienced in the South was the worst he has met with for 80 years, snow and rain incessantly falling. In West Coast Sounds the mountains and trees were covered with snow to water’s edge, consequently cold was intense. Old man named John Aubrey, who arrived at Bay of Islands in 1828, died at Blenheim on Tuesday, aged 99.
Dunedin : Ministers Conference passed resolution protesting against Divorce Bill as contrary to Divine law and public weal, urging Govt to oppose it. At same time Conference affirms its conviction that men and women should be placed on equality in regard to divorce. Christchurch : At Police Court, a young man named Arthur Simpson pleaded guilty to charge laid under section 3 of Offensive Publications Act, 1892, of selling pictures of offensive nature- Bench lined accused 60s and costs.
Paris : Dr. Herz, connected with Panama canal frauds, now residing in England, found guilty of contempt of Court, and sentenced to 5 live years’ imprisonment for not appearing to defend charges against him. Northern and Southern Slavonians in Austria demand separate law Courts and local Governments, involving virtually division of the Monarchy. Justice Sir H. Davy succeeds Sir C. Bussell as a Lord of Appeal in Ordinary.
