OiIRISTCHURCH, Thursday Grand National Meeting commenced today. It rained all night, but cleared this morning, when the sun came out. Course is dead.
First Hunters’ Hurdles: Gillie I, Puinau 2, Lawrence 3. Won by half length. Dividends : £l6 3s and £6O las. Maiden Hurdles: Baruado 1, Goodwood and Lady Sockbutn were only other starters, but both baulked.
N. Z. Grand National Steeplechase, of £5OO sovs. Three miles and a half. 8. Gollan’s ch g Norton, by Ascot— Romp, aged, 12st 81b (Clarke) 1 Bombardier, lost 111 b ... -j
Amalgam, 9st 71b ... 3 Also started—Despised, list 31b; Booties, lOst 51b; Belle, 9st 111 b; Nanakia, 9st 81b.
Clark, who rode Norton, lost his stirrup-iron, but finished with it and the stirrup-leather ih his mouth. Norton won easily.
