Referendum Bill, introduced by Mr O’Regan, read first time. Mr Buick wishes Friendly Societies cheques to be exempted from Stamp Duty. The Premier says the Government will make it clear in the Municipal Corporations Act that members oflocal bodies are not to be permitted to enter into contracts with such local bodies. Chistchurch Truth states that Messrs M’Clatchie & Co, of Christchurch, have received an order for 50,000 tons of Westport coal for use of Japanese fleet, and that this is, perhaps, the largest transaction in one line over concluded in the Colony.
