John Tinline, Esq.
( Pelorus Guardian.)
Gradually the old pioneers who first settled m this Colony are passing away, and those who remain now stand out more prominently as men of graud physique—men who were, figuratively speaking, giants tn their early days, men who were both physically and mentally far superior to the ordinary emigrant or citizen of today, for they were only a few men out of some millions who elected to make homes for themselves in a new world, simply from the reckless spirit of enterprise, pluck, and endurance, they possessed as Englishmen. Of this special type is John Tmline, Esq., now one of our most wealthy settlers, and, to show what he was made of, ho walked from Wanganui overland to Wellington fifty three years ago, with only a Maori boy for a companion. Since that period he has rendered great service to tho Colony by adjusting many Native claims, both in Nelson and Marlborough. Mr John linline was the gentleman who negotiated between the Government and the Natives, and finally concluded the purchase of Waitohi, now called Picton, and it would be a graceful act ou the part of the inhabitants to perpetuate the name of this gentleman in some prominent way connected with that town, just as his name stands out tn bold relief as the founder of the Ttuiino Scholarship.
