Big fire at Greymouth ; buildings destroyed : North & Co’s (drapers, in whose premises fire began), IMills furniture warehouse. Kettle Bros, grocers, Melbourne Hotel, 2 offices and small shops. Insurances £5,000. Had flames got hold on other side of street Greymouth would have been ruined, as strong wind was blowing at time.
Mr James Wallace retired from position of General Manager, and Secy, of Manawatu Railway Coy. The machinery and plant for Bell’s (London) match factory in Wellington is in course of erection. Expected it will be ready for work in a month. Govt proposals as to liquor law will be a consolidating and amending measure under title of ‘ The Licensing Bill,’ which will sweep out of existence all present licensing laws, including- the Alcoholic Liquors Sale Control Act, and introduce various amendments of proceedure. Stated in the lobbies the Bill will provide that one-half must vote to make a poll effective, but that bare majority of those voting shall be all that is necessary. Major Steward desires to see revision of maximum number of votes allowed to county ratepayers, and provision by which County Councils shall be required to call meeting of ratepayers at least once a year to discuss county affairs.
