LONDON, July 30

Further news from East states loss of life by sinking of Chinese transport vessel by torpedo fired from Japanese warship was greater than first reported. It appears the disabled vessel had upwards of 1709 people on board, majority of whom were drowned and of those saved 40 were flicked up by French gunboat under running fire. Every officer on board the transport was killed.

Chinese are placing mines across the Yang-tse-kiang river, and export of rice is prohibited. There is much enthusiasm in Japan at success of their forces.

A battle is reported to have taken place at Yasan, but result is unknown.
