THE KAIKOURA STAR. KAIKOURA, JULY 27, 1894.
Mr Sawers, Chief Dairy Inspector, has been asked to revisit Kaikoura' early next month. Report of Dairy Company’s proceedings ; of local Branch of the Workers' Union; Football notes, and other matter, crowded out. Conference of racing delegates in Wellington affirmed desirability of establishing a N. Z. Jockey Club, but business of the Conference was adjourned till November, in Christchurch. Training rights allowed. The Court was crowded, to semisuffocation, on Wednesday, to hear the case of Monk v. Bell, before Mr Bishop, S.M. A report of the case appears in this issue. Though lengthy, even now, it is considerably condensed, ‘ boiling down ' being necessary to find space for the whole of it in this evening's paper. When the Inner Clarence poisoners were coming over the range on Monday one of the men nearly lost his life. He slipped on the snow, the face of which was like ice, and slid down, at an angle of about 75 degrees, for a distance of 120 feet, but was miraculously saved from going over a precipice. His mates went to the rescue expecting to find a corpse, but the man (Nolan) had not sustained any injury other than severe bruises about both arms. It was a thrilling incident. A general meeting of the Kaikoura County Football Club was held in the Court House last Wednesday evening; Mr A. Davidson occupied the chair. A resolution was carried requesting that all members in arrears with their subscriptions pay up on or before next Thursday.—Owing to the Vice-Captain having taken up an antagonistic attitude towards the Club, members considered it their duty to elect another in his Stead, and after Messrs E. Prince and Fk. Flower had declined the office, Mr F. Cox was elected to fill the position.— Discussion took place as to when the return match versus Waiau could be played, but nothing definite was arrived at. The present state of the South road would necessitate the team making the journey on horseback, and as several of those who have promised to represent the Club are not accustomed to riding, it appears certain that a team will not go South until the road is in a fit state for wheel traffic.—The meeting adjourned till next Wednesday evening.
