SYDNEY, July 9
Fire occurred today in railway branch of Colonial Secretary's Office, and threatened destruction of the magnificent building devoted to that department. By soma exertion flames were mastered, and damage confined to portion of top floor. Damage is estimated at £lO,OOO. Letter received by Govt from Johannesberg- suggests considerable benefit would accrue to Colony commercially if it were represented in South Africa, where markets offer increasing facilities for sale of many colonial products. BRISBANE, July 10
Schooner Mary, belonging to London Missionary Society, wrecked in Papuan Gulf. All hands saved. Mysterious murder reported near Mackay. Man named Anderson was found dead, having been slashed to death with a cane-knife. Two murders of a similar character have taken place in same district lately, and perpetrators remain undiscovered. ADELAIDE, July 10
Lord Rosebery has offered Dr Reunion, Bishop of Adelaide, the Bishopric of Bath and Wells, recently vacated by death of Lord A. C. Hervev.
LAUNCESTON, July 10
Auckland barquentine Indiana, with cargo of guano, totally wrecked on Cape Barren. Vessel which discovered wreck reports the Indiana was deserted. Believed crew have gone to Clark Island.
ADELAIDE, July 11
Legislative Council, after discussing resolutions passed by the Legislative Assembly in direction of fostering the frozen meat trade, carried amendment requiring Govt to introduce a Bill on subject.

Strike matters are generally quiet. Large reinforcements of police sent to disaffected districts.
BRISBANE, July 12
Pastoralists Union notified shearers that unless they sign agreement before Monday the Union will be compelled to engage new men from elsewhere to whom it will give long terms of employment, so that unless strikers accept work now they will be not likely to get any for some time. July 12
Document of incriminating character found on Martin, organiser of Australian Labor Federation, in connection with burning the shed on Ayrshire station.
