There died in April an old sea captain who did the Siate some service during the Crimea War. Capt Hamill had command of the Cunarii steamer Cambria, which was engag’ed for transport purposes, and for one remarkably expeditious ferformance, the towing of 4 other transports out of harm’s way, he earned the special approbation of the senior officer of Transports, who signalled 4 Well done, Cambria.’ While Sebastapool was being bomparded Capt Hamill was employed to tow disabled ships from under the fire of the forts. Subsequently he had charge of the Argus when the Crimean cable was laid. Capt Hamill was 70 at the time of his death.
