The Colonial Conference.

Premier of Cape Colony and latter’s Delegates to Conference are seeking to obtain reciprocity—Cape wines against Canadin lumber. Canadian Press strongly condemn exclusion of reporters from the Conference. OTTAWA, July 5 Conference rejected proposal for immediate construction of Pacific cable, on tbe ground that data at present is insufficient. July 6 Conference resolved that in event of laying of Pacific cable it should be extended to Cape Colony. Motion to foster preferential duties between Great Britain and Colonies is now under discussion. OTTAWA, July 8 Huddart has submitted to the Conference an outline of his proposal for fast Atlantic service and increased Australian service. At Conference, Foster (Canada) moved and Wrixon (Victoria) seconded resolution to effect that it is advisable that Colonies and Great Britain should agree upon Customs Tariff favoring trade within Empire against Foreigners, and that before Britain agrees it is advisable to settle terms of Intercolonial reciprocity including South African Customs Union. Delegates who spoke pressed importance of reciprocity m strengthening the Nation’s position. It was proposed lln-.t another Congress be field in 5 years’ uiifi. It was pointed out that the verv fact of a Conference being held hud strikingly reaffirmed unity of the Empire. There was no fear of any new spirit in Colonies. Combination was part of tbe price that must be paid for the Empire.
