Sir JI. O’Rorke Elected Speaker.
WELLINGTON, Today Parliament was opened by commission yesterday afternoon. Weather fine. The Governor's Speech will be delivered this afternoon. After the Members of the House of Representatives were sworn in the House proceeded to tbe election of Speaker. Sir Maurice O’Rorke and Major Steward were proposed, O’Rorke winning by 45 votes to 19. The Governor’s Speech. We are indebted to the Secretary of the Telegraph Dept, for a precis of tbe Governor’s Speech, delivered this afternoon. It is an unusually long deliverance from the • Throne,' and we are, therefore, unable to do more than pick out, for this issue, what appears, at a glance, to be the leading features, viz: —Volume of product! continue to increase; Colony's credit stands paramount in London ; public and private indebtedness is decreasing. Both gross and net surplus of revenue over expenditure has resulted for past year. Loan Coy's affairs are declared to have been scandalously mismanaged, suggesting safeguards. Acquisition and settlement of Native Lands and simplication of laws urged, algo repurchase of private lands. Measure to effectually help and regulate Dairy Industry to be introduced. Mining industry to be assisted. Opportunity to consider Liquor question will be afforded, by a measure to consolidate and amend the Licensing law and simplify proceedure at local option poll. House to have opportunity of dealing with Railway management. Reform of Parliamentary proceedure indicated. Bill to prevent loans at injurious rates of interest to be introduced, also legislation for improvement of conditions of manual labourers.
