In the Commons, Sir Edward Gray, Under Secretary to Foreign Office, said it was decided to proclaim a protectorate over Uganda, and probably that a Commissioner would be appointed to administer affairs there.
Mrs Gordon Baillie, convicted on a charge of obtaining pictures by false pretences, has been sentenced to 7 years’ imprisonment.
Russian detectives have arrived in London to protect the Czar against a plot to kill him, while on his visit to England. BERLIN, June 2 Emperor of Germany has bad to submit to operation for tumor. Operation was conducted by Dr Bergemann, who removed an encysted tumor from the Emperor’s cheek. The patient is progressing favourably. Reported in Berlin that two battalions and whole gendarmes in Bulgaria have revolted in favour of Stambouloff, late Premier. Report adds that fighting with loyal troops has taken place in streets of Sofia, and that many have been killed and wounded. SOFIA, June 3 Reported that Stambouloff has been arrested. Stambouloff is alleged to have been concerned in a plot to banish Prince Ferdinand, and place on the throne Count Hartenan, child of 4 years of age, a son of Prince Alexander of Bulgaria, with himself as Regent. VIENNA, June 3 The Pope, in an autograph letter, thanked the Emperor of Austria for refusing to coerce with Hungarian Upper House to pass Civil Marriages’ Bill at Premier’s request.
