WELLINGTON, May 30
Heavy Sou’west gale started here yesterday morning. The ketch Alert, from Lyttelton to Greymouth, ran ashore in Lyell’s Bay, about 8 a.m. Thick weather hiding the land until too late for her to haul off, the captain beached her on the sand almost high and dry. The crew got ashore safe. Railway traffic in Wairarapa and Manawatu districts obstructed by slips. There are no Birthday honors for New Zealand.
WELLINGTON, Mny 31 There is very little abatement in the Southerly gale, but rain has stopped. Floods and slips are reported from the country districts, and trains are detained.
Heavy rain has fallen at Christchurch.
Complaints are made made about ■ome of the unemployed who are receiving shelter and food from the Benevolent Society. It is said some are perfect blackguards. The Fox Commission is still sailing •erenely along. All sorts of people are being examined. PALMERSTON NORTH, May 31 Immense damage done to roads and bridges in this district by floods. There is hardly a bridge which has not been more or less seriously damaged, and work of restoration will involve heavy tax on funds of local bodies.
