FOOTBALL.

[Br Oval.] Some useful practice was indulged in yesterday, and I noticed that several of the more learned players were putting some who are not well acquainted with the game through in a satisfactory manner. Rumour has it that the Deputy Captain intends resigning his position and giving up football ; various reasons are assigned for his retirement. I hope that the rumour will prove incorrect.

How about a Town v. Country match on Queen’s Birthday morning ? It could be easily arranged if members will only show a little energy in the matter. On the occasion of a football match between the officers of a certain depot and a team of lawyers, the former had prepared a splendid lunch for their visitors before the game, both teams doing themselves thoroughly well, and going in strong for champagne and cigars, the officers anticipating an easy victory from the generous way in which their opponents helped themselves. On looking towards the football ground after the lunch, a remarkably fresh looking lot of hairy giants were seen kicking a ball about. The officers naturally asked who the strangers were. The reply from a lawyer was: ‘ Oh, those are our playing team ; we are only the lunching team.’— Wellington Herald.
